How Semax Works

Semax is a synthetic ACTH(4-10) analog developed at the Russian Institute of Molecular Genetics. Despite a plasma half-life of only 2-3 minutes, its downstream neurotrophin effects persist 20-24 hours. It crosses the blood-brain barrier with 0.093% of dose reaching brain tissue within 2 minutes, and 80% of brain radioactivity remains intact Semax. For research use only.

Semax is a synthetic peptide analog of ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), specifically a modified fragment of the ACTH(4-10) sequence. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the 1980s and has been a registered pharmaceutical in Russia and Ukraine since 1996. It is one of the few peptides with a documented history of clinical use, though it remains unapproved by the FDA in the United States.

Semax research has focused primarily on cognitive function and neuroprotection. Published studies have investigated its effects on BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) expression, NGF (nerve growth factor) levels, and neurotransmitter systems including dopamine and serotonin. In Russian clinical literature, it has been studied in the context of stroke recovery, cognitive impairment, and optic nerve conditions. Preclinical research has also explored its effects on immune function and inflammation.

Standard Semax is the base ACTH(4-10) analog. NA-Semax (N-Acetyl Semax) adds an acetyl group, which researchers believe improves stability and may enhance BDNF-related activity. NASA-Semax (N-Acetyl Semax Amidate) adds both an acetyl group and an amide group, making it the most modified version with potentially longer duration of activity.
